Travel tips and facts about Tanzania

WELL PREPARED FOR ADVENTURE

For many, a trip to Tanzania equals adventure: breathtaking safaris, rich culture and the impressive Kilimanjaro. To make the most of your trip, it is important to be well prepared. Below you will find useful travel tips and facts that will help you enjoy this beautiful country carefree.

Documents and visa

For Tanzania, you need a passport valid for at least six months after your return. In addition, a visa is required. You can apply for this in advance online via an E-visa, a process that takes about 14 days. Our advice: arrange this at least four weeks before departure and carefully review the information about applying for a visa to Tanzania. An alternative is to purchase a visa on arrival, but expect longer queues and cash payment in U.S. dollars.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Good travel insurance is indispensable during your vacation in Tanzania. It covers not only medical expenses, but also theft, loss of luggage or even an emergency evacuation. It is also important to look in advance at the health measures you can take to make your trip worry-free. You can get information about this from an insurance company.

PROPER VACCINATIONS

For safe travel, certain vaccinations are highly recommended. These include DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio) and Hepatitis A. Yellow fever is only mandatory if you have been in a country where this disease is present for more than a week. For Tanzania itself there is no obligation, but it is wise to always check with the GGD or a tropical doctor. That way you can be sure you’ll be well protected when you travel!

PROTECTION AGAINST MALARIA

There is no vaccine against malaria. The use of malaria tablets is therefore recommended. In addition, it helps to cover yourself well at night and to bring an anti-mosquito spray with a high percentage of DEET. Note: DEET is not for sale in Tanzania, so bring it with you from the Netherlands.

MONEY MATTERS AND PAYMENTS

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling, but the U.S. dollar is accepted everywhere. Be sure to carry some cash USD on arrival, as there are no ATMs at Kilimanjaro Airport. In towns and villages you can withdraw cash from an ATM, but keep in mind that there is a maximum of 400,000 TZS (about $160) per withdrawal. Paying by credit card is often possible, but regular bank cards do not work in Tanzania.

CULTURE AND POPULATION

Tanzanians are known for their friendliness and helpfulness. They are happy to chat with tourists and show great interest in your family and daily life. Just keep in mind that intimacy between husband and wife in public is not common. By showing respect for local customs and traditions, you create a valuable connection with the people.

THE TASTE OF TANZANIA

During your trip, you can count on a diverse cuisine full of fresh produce. Think grilled meats, spicy rice dishes, curries and an abundance of fresh fruit. Lodges and campsites often serve buffets or three-course menus. Although a la carte dining is less common, there is always ample choice and dishes are prepared with care.

With the right preparation, your trip to Tanzania will not only be unforgettable, but also worry-free. From visas to vaccinations and from culture to cuisine, those who set off well-informed can focus fully on the adventure.
