Mount Meru also called Kili’s little brother, is the fifth highest peak in Africa. The summit Socialist Peak is at 4,562m elevation. Mount Meru is located in Arusha National Park giving you the true African safari feel as you encounter all kinds of wildlife during the route. Don’t think Mount Meru is a “walk in the park. You need good fitness if you want to climb Mount Meru. Ideally, you should do this climb in 4 days. This gives you enough time to enjoy the beauty of the mountain while acclimatizing and minimizing the risks of altitude sickness

An ascent of Kilimanjaro takes from 5 to 9 days depending on the route chosen, not including travel days to and from Tanzania. Routes such as Marangu and Machame are 5 to 7 days, while the Lemosho and Northern Circuit routes take 7 to 9 days. A longer route increases the chances of success because your body has more time to acclimate to the altitude of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.
What does a Kilimanjaro climb cost?
The price of a Kilimanjaro climb depends on the route chosen, the number of days and whether you climb in a group or privately. Indicatively, a multi-day climb starts from โฌ2,750 per person, this includes 2 nights stay in hotel prior to the climb, guide, porters, cooks, park fees, meals and camping equipment and one night after the climb in hotel. Bright Tanzania additionally offers day trips starting at โฌ250 per person for travelers who want to get acquainted with the mountain.
How difficult is Kilimanjaro compared to Mount Meru?
At 5,895 meters, Mount Kilimanjaro is considerably higher than Mount Meru (4,562 meters), making altitude sickness the biggest obstacle. Mount Meru is more technically challenging due to steeper passages and requires good fitness, but due to the lower altitude, altitude sickness is less likely to be a problem. Many climbers use Mount Meru as an acclimatization climb prior to Kilimanjaro.
What fitness level do you need for a Kilimanjaro climb?
For a Kilimanjaro climb you need a good basic level of fitness, but no technical climbing experience. It is recommended to train several months in advance with cardio (running, cycling) and hikes with day backpacking, ideally with elevation gain. A medical check with your doctor is wise, especially if you have heart or lung problems. The summit is accessible to anyone with good basic health.
What is included in a climb with Bright Tanzania?
An ascent with Bright Tanzania includes transportation to and from the gate, an experienced English-speaking mountain guide, porters, cooks, all park and wildlife management fees, three meals per day and unlimited water, coffee and tea. For multi-day itineraries, camping equipment (tents, sleeping mats, dining tent) is included. Bright Tanzania contributes to the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project, which ensures fair wages and good working conditions for porters.

Yes, for travelers who do not want to reach the summit, Bright Tanzania offers day trips on both Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. A day trip on Kilimanjaro takes you via the Marangu route to Mandara Hut and costs โฌ250 per person. A two-day variant with overnight in a hut costs โฌ495 per person. Mount Meru offers similar options: a one-day hike through Arusha National Park (โฌ250) or a two-day trek with overnight at Miriakamba Hut (โฌ495).
What are the routes to climb Kilimanjaro?
Kilimanjaro has seven official routes: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Umbwe, Northern Circuit and Shira. The Marangu route ('Coca-Cola route') is the only one with hut accommodation. The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is from January to March and June to October. These are the dry months, with the best chance of clear views and stable weather conditions. April, May and November are the rainy seasons and are generally not recommended due to slippery paths and limited visibility.
