Paje
Located on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, Paje is hugely popular with kite surfers and active travelers. The vibe is young, lively and international. The constant wind makes the beach ideal for water sports. There are many small-scale lodges, beach cafes and nice restaurants. Every night there is live music or DJ at one of the restaurants. At low tide, the sea is far away, but the beach remains wide and impressive. Paje suits travelers who like exercise and freedom, but also like to be part of an informal, international community.
Jambiani
Jambiani is an authentic fishing village on the southeast coast of Zanzibar. No rush here, no crowds; the village has its own rhythm. The beautiful lodge and boutique hotels are often located directly on the beach and are small-scale. There are many nice restaurants on the beach, where you can eat delicious food in the afternoon and evening. On the beach during the day you can hear children playing, see women harvesting seaweed, fishermen leaving with their dhow boat and soon get to know the people of the village. Kiwengwa
Kiwengwa is one of the longer beaches on the east coast. Here you will find mostly larger hotels and resorts. Over the years, the area has taken on a strong Italian character, with many Italian restaurants and visitors. Kiwengwa is therefore sometimes called “Little Italy. At low tide the sea retreats far, but at high tide it is a pleasant beach for swimming.
Pongwe
Pongwe is a small bay on the east coast of Zanzibar. It is very quiet here which makes it an ideal beach for travelers who need peace and quiet. The beach is sheltered among palm trees and has remarkably fine sand and calm waters. Because of its location in a bay, you are less affected by the strong tides here, making it a fine place to swim, even at low tide. Accommodations are small and cozy, often with direct access to the beach.
Michamvi-Pingwe
Located at the very tip of the southeast coast, Michamvi-Pingwe still feels like one of the quietest parts of Zanzibar. Here you’ll find only sea, palm trees and small-scale lodges scattered along the beach. What also makes Michamvi-Pingwe special is The Rock, a restaurant literally perched on a rock in the sea. Depending on the tide, you can walk there or be taken by boat. It is a familiar place, but the atmosphere remains relaxed.
Stone Town Beach
Stone Town Beach is located right on the edge of the old town of Stone Town. It is not a typical beach to linger all day, but it does offer a nice place for a walk or a swim. Matemwe is an elongated, quiet beach on the northeast coast of Zanzibar overlooking the island of Mnemba. Matemwe Beach is also known for its vibrant underwater world, making it a perfect area for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. Most lodges are small-scale, often locally run and located right on the beach. Tourism hasn’t really taken off here yet, so you rarely see vendors on the beach. Ebb and flow is very noticeable here. At low tide, the sea retreats far back, creating a vast landscape. Ideal for a wonderful walk. Travelers who consciously choose peace, simplicity and nature will therefore find Matemwe a fine place.
Jozani Forest: Chwaka Bay National Park
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is a beautiful nature reserve on the island of Zanzibar, Tanzania. Established in 2004, the park covers 50 square kilometers and includes a variety of ecosystems, from mangrove forests to dense woodlands and swamps. It is the only national park on the island and was once home to antelope and leopards. Today it is the last remaining refuge in the world inhabited by the rare Red Colobus monkey. Located 35 km southeast of Stone Town, it is a perfect day trip for monkey lovers and tree enthusiasts.
