A great diversity of animals in the Ngorongoro Crater
The crater is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. An estimated 20,000 big game live in the crater. It is also one of the few places where the rare black rhino can be spotted reasonably well. The presence of so much wildlife also makes the crater the place with the highest concentration of predators in the world. Among others, lions, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals are very commonly seen. The lions in Ngorongoro Crater are larger on average than elsewhere in Africa because there is plenty of food available throughout the year.
In addition to the rhinoceros, the ruminants are also represented by wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, elephant (only males, as females with their young do not move among all these predators), hippopotamus, antelope and warthogs.
Traversing diverse landscapes in the Ngorongoro Crater
The drive to and through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is breathtaking. You drive through dense highlands, where there is a good chance of spotting a variety of wildlife. Once you begin the descent to the bottom of Ngorongoro Crater, it immediately becomes clear why it is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The imposing 600-meter-high crater wall creates a unique ecosystem with diverse climate zones and landscapes. Here you will find a salt lake as well as vast grasslands, swamps and forests.
Thanks to these varied landscapes, the biodiversity in the crater is impressive. The chances of spotting the famous Big Five are high here, but giraffes, zebras, gazelles and wildebeest are also abundant. Along the shores of the salt lake you often see a pink haze, caused by elegant groups of flamingos.
