Lake Natron
Discover the mysterious surroundings of Lake Natron
Lake Natron is one of the most picturesque places in Tanzania. Its main features are the beautiful volcanic landscape dominated by the massive active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai – the sacred mountain of the Maasai, the huge Lake Natron that can take on the most extraordinary colors and the atmospheric thatched boma houses of the Maasai.
Flamingos & Pelicans
Lake Natron is the breeding ground of the Lesser Flamingo, 90% of the world’s population is born here. This is the habitat of a number of Maasai tribes who have settled around the ancient irrigation canals of Engaruka, halfway to the lake, and around the lake itself. So this also makes this area great for learning about the daily life of the Maasai. The area is less easily accessible and the roads poor and where you have to cross a small river from time to time.
In and around the lake you can take a hike with a Maasai guide. There is also the opportunity to visit the Engaresero Falls. A challenging hike through the valley created thousands of years ago after an eruption of Ol Doinyo Lengai.
Lake Natron is included in the itinerary from July to October for safaris to the north of the Serengeti because from here it is possible to cross through to Longido and Lobo which cuts quite a bit off and enters the Serengeti at Kleins Gate in the north by the Mara River.
If you are adventurous and looking for an authentic, special location, then you should definitely visit Lake Natron.
