Whale Sharks on Mafia Island
The whale shark is the largest fish species in the world and can grow up to 12 meters long. Despite its size, it poses no danger to humans. This is because whale sharks have no teeth. They feed on plankton and small organisms that they filter from the water.
During their annual migration, whale sharks swim very close to the coast of Mafia Island. As a result, they are easy to spot during a snorkeling or diving trip from October through March.
Mafia Island, one of the three islands that belong to Tanzania, lies south of the mainland and is part of a protected marine nature reserve. By limiting the number of visitors, the fragile marine ecosystem is protected. The clear, pristine waters and abundance of plankton make this area an ideal habitat for whale sharks and many other marine animals.

Practical Information
This activity is not available year-round. The migration season for whale sharks near Mafia Island runs from October through March. Mafia Island is accessible only by plane. Therefore, we recommend combining a stay on the island with your safari as an extension of your trip through Tanzania.
