TIPS & MONEY MATTERS

After a safari, it is very common to tip the guide & driver who took care of your safari. In Tanzania, the tip (in addition to the salary) is part of the income, so we recommend tipping. Put the tip in an envelope with the name of your guide or driver, so everyone gets their share. Guidelines for tipping are given below, but of course you decide how much you give. As long as the gift comes from the heart it is always warmly received.

SAFARI:

  • Driver/Guide: between $15 and $25 per day per tour group

LIMITATIONS:

  • Head guide: between $20 and $25 per day – per group
  • Assistant guide: between $15 and $20 per assistant guide per day – per group
  • Cook: between $15 and $20 per day – per group
  • Porters: $10 per porter per day on average – per group

CASH OR CREDIT CARD

In Tanzania, payments can be made in both U.S. dollars (USD) and Tanzanian shillings (TZS). We recommend that you already withdraw USD at the departure airport. In Tanzania and Zanzibar, you can easily use Credit Cards at an automated teller machine (ATM) to withdraw TZS. Indicate to your driver that you want to withdraw and they will make sure you have cash before you enter the national parks. Drinks, meals and souvenirs can be paid in cash or with Credit Cards.
When ordering USD from your bank, be sure to order USD issued after the year 2006. Bills issued before the year 2006 are not accepted in Tanzania. Credit Cards is accepted in most hotels, lodges and restaurants but count on an extra 5% as a transaction fee.
If you are flying to Zanzibar from Arusha Airport, you still have the option of withdrawing money at one of the ATMs. The ATM can be found on the outside, on the left as you stand in front of the departure lounge.
