VISA FOR TANZANIA

To enter Tanzania, you need a visa. Whether you go on safari, climb Kilimanjaro or relax on the beautiful beaches of Zanzibar, a visa is required for all international visitors (nonresidence).

TYPES OF VISAS FOR TANZANIA

There are different types of visas you can apply for, depending on the purpose and duration of your stay:
  • Tourist visa: This visa is most commonly requested by travelers coming to Tanzania for a vacation. The tourist visa is valid for 90 days and allows multiple entry into Tanzania within the applicable period.
  • Business Visa: Travelers going to Tanzania for meetings, conferences or other business activities need a business visa. This visa often has a shorter validity period, depending on the nature of your trip.
  • Transit Visa: If you are traveling through Tanzania on your way to another destination, you can apply for a transit visa. This visa is usually valid for 7 days and is granted only if you can prove that you are traveling on to another country.
  • Volunteer Visa: For those who want to volunteer in Tanzania, there is a special visa that allows you to stay in the country for a certain period of time.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A VISA.

You can apply for a visa to Tanzania in several ways.

E-visa
Tanzania offers the opportunity to apply for a visa online through their official e-visa portal: Tanzania eVisa – Welcome (immigration.go.tz). This is a quick and easy way to get your visa. You fill out an online form, upload the required documents, pay the $50 visa fee and you will receive your E visa by email. Don’t wait too long to apply, it takes about 14 days to complete, we recommend submitting your application at least four weeks before departure.

Visa on arrival
You can also buy a visa at the airport for $50 after you land. You should expect a longer queue. You must pay for the visa in cash and in US Dollars. It is not possible to withdraw cash at the airport in Tanzania.

DOCUMENTS FOR VISA APPLICATION

Before you start the digital application, make sure you have a file of the documents below properly saved.
  • Recent passport photo of all travelers (jpg)
  • Copy passport (front only) of all travelers (jpg)
  • Booking outbound and return flights (pdf)
You need to submit a new application for each traveler, though you can use the same email address for different applications. When you arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport keep your boarding pass handy. This is checked before you are allowed to enter the airport. If you have a visa you can go straight to passport control (left) upon entering the arrival hall. Your Visa and arrival note (pg. 3) must be filled out completely, sign on this as well. Importing plastic bags is prohibited, bring unpackaged items as much as possible or use a cloth or leather bag as carry-on luggage.
