Tanzania is a paradise for bird lovers! With more than 1,100 bird species, the country offers a huge diversity of unusual birds to spot during your safari. Over 30 bird species are found exclusively in Tanzania and new species are still being discovered frequently. Some birds are so rare that they have not been observed with certainty for years. Tourists can also enjoy bird life in Tanzania. The abundance and variety of birds on safari is admirable.

Birds during your safari trip through Tanzania

Marabou

In Tanzania you can spot the Marabou, among others. This large bird has a bald head and neck and is a common sight in the Serengeti.

Fork-tailed dabbler

The fork-tailed warbler gets its name from its long, forked tail and the fact that it is a species of warbler (a family of motley, medium-sized birds of the order warbler birds). The birds are commonly found in national parks and near acacia trees. They avoid human settlements.

Gray crown faucet

The beautiful gray crowned crane, also known as the crowned crane is the only crane species in Tanzania. Standing just over a meter tall, it graces the landscape with its blue-gray feathers. Black, white and maroon accents adorn its wings and it has a distinctive red lobe under its neck. What distinguishes the crown crane from other cranes is its distinctive, straw-colored crest, which sits atop its head like a work of art. This crown crane is also the only musical crane! It finds its nest high in the trees, near the rushing of water. Yet it prefers to feed on the wide open plains or in wooded areas. It has a clever hunting method, stomping on the ground with powerful steps to chase insects.
