Climbing Oldonyo Lengai

Ol Doinyoi Lengai, the sacred mountain of the Maasai. If you are up to the challenge, it is possible to climb to the crater rim with an experienced guide.
The ascent of this active volcano is done at night. You will be picked up around 11 p.m. and taken to the starting point of the climb. You will start the climb around midnight and will arrive at the summit around 5 am. Arriving at the crater rim, you can rest until sunrise. You will have stunning views of the vast plains of the Rift Valley and Ngorongoro conservation area.
The descent must be completed before 9 am before it gets too hot then, the sun heats up the volcanic ash slopes very quickly. The total ascent takes about between 10 – 11 hours.

Practical
This hike is possible daily and suitable for trained hikers. We recommend wearing good sturdy hiking shoes with a good tread. You will walk on lava grit and rocky trails. It is tough steep climb and exhausting trek because you will ascend 2,400 meters within a few hours. You need to be well-exercised and healthy and, above all, well-footed. Put on layers of clothing and bring a headlamp because when you start it will be completely dark.
